Lanesborough, MA : Two drivers seriously injured after head-on crash on Route 8/Old State Road near the Union Chapel on Tuesday morning, February 16, 2016

A 19-year-old North Adams woman driving on Route 8 Tuesday morning collided head-on with a box truck and was later transported to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield.

The crash caused serious injury to both vehicles' drivers. It occurred at roughly 9:30 a.m. near the Route 8/Old State Road intersection, near the Union Chapel.

Samantha Scutt, the woman later transported to Baystate, required extrication by first responders using a hydraulic rescue tool on her 2002 Toyota Rav 4. The process took roughly 90 minutes, after which Scutt was transported by ambulance to Berkshire Medical Center.

Baystate has yet to respond to Eagle inquiries after Scutt's condition.

Carl Gasco, 50, of Millbury did not require extrication, but also ended up at Berkshire Medical Center, suffering broken legs and possible internal injuries, according to police.

The box truck Gasco operated was a 2010 Chevrolet Express owned by Linders, Inc., of Worcester.

According to Lanesborough Police Department reports, Scutt was driving northbound when witnesses saw her veer into the southbound lane and strike the truck.

The vehicles careened into and demolished a nearby Western Massachusetts Electric Co. telephone pole leaving "electrical lines leaning dangerously close," according to police.

Police also said Scutt will be issued a marked lanes violation for veering into the opposite lane.

Town police and fire, Massachusetts State Police, Cheshire, Pittsfield and Dalton Fire Departments and County Ambulance responded to the accident, which caused Route 8 to be closed to through traffic for nearly six hours.
