Bridgeton, NC : Jason R. Price died when his truck struck a tree at U.S. 17 north of Bridgeton On Tuesday, April 26th, 2016
Bridgeton, North Carolina
A family has lost a son, and a fire department has lost a brother.
Jason R. Price, 23, died Tuesday when the box truck he was driving ran off U.S. 17 north of Bridgeton and struck a tree.
Price, who lived in Wilson, had been a volunteer firefighter for the Cove City Fire Department, starting as a junior firefighter at the age of 15.
“I really don’t know what to think,” said Tony Banks, Cove City’s fire chief. “I’ve shed many tears over it.”
Banks said the news of Price’s death has left the department’s volunteer firefighters shocked and upset.
“They loved Jason like a brother,” he said. “That’s what he was to us.”
Price left the fire station last year to move to Wilson where his mother and father live, Banks said.
“We still considered him a part of our own and we always will,” he said. “He was an easygoing guy, always willing to do what you asked him. He was active in church and always had a smile on his face. He loved kids to no end.”
Banks said that even though Price had left, the young man returned to the station to help with events.
“He enjoyed every minute of it,” Banks said. “We loved having him around.”
Price died at the scene of the crash on U.S. 17 near the bridge over Little Swift Creek between Ernul and Askins, according to the Highway Patrol. Price was driving south toward Bridgeton when he went off the road to the right near a curve and
overcorrected, crossing the two-lane highway to the left, running off the road down an embankment and striking a tree.
The wreck occurred about 1:50 p.m. The highway remained closed until about 4:30 p.m. so rescue personnel could work at the scene, and the heavily damaged truck could be removed from the highway.
Trooper Matthew Eure said the truck was from Ihrie Supply and was fully loaded, and some items from the truck were scattered at the scene.
