GRAND HAVEN TWP, MI : One driver was injured in a five-vehicle crash on Tuesday, August 15, 2017

One driver was injured in a five-vehicle crash shortly before 4 p.m. Tuesday on southbound U.S. 31 at Ferris Street.

Police said Brittany Bunker, 24, suffered a non-life-threatening head injury in the crash. An ambulance transported the Grand Haven-area woman to North Ottawa Community Hospital, where she was listed in “guarded” condition Tuesday evening, said Sgt. Cal Keuning of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office.

Bunker was conscious and alert at the scene of the crash.

No other injuries were reported.

Keuning said the preliminary investigation shows that a 30-year-old Grand Haven-area man was driving south on the highway when he approached the Ferris Street intersection at 3:53 p.m. Vehicles in front of him were stopped for a red light.

The man failed to stop and crashed into the back end of Bunker’s car, Keuning said. That collision pushed Bunker’s car into a roofing company’s truck in front of her, which then crashed into the back of a fourth vehicle stopped for the red light.

After all that, the 30-year-old man’s green pickup truck collided with a fifth vehicle, a small silver car in the other southbound lane.

The man’s name is being withheld pending a further investigation by the Sheriff’s Office, Keuning said. Police placed the man in handcuffs and took him from the crash scene in a sheriff’s vehicle.

Both traffic lanes were blocked after the crashes, but vehicles were moving past the scene on the shoulder of the road the entire time emergency crews were at the scene.

Police said a witness told them that the green pickup truck ran a red light at Hayes Street just before ramming into the back end of Bunker’s car stopped for the red light at Ferris Street.

The crash may have been caused by a possible drunken driver, police said at the scene.

The Grand Haven Township Fire-Rescue Department assisted police at the crash scene.
