Norwalk, CT : One person dead in coach bus crash on Interstate 95 Wednesday afternoon, Oct 7, 2015
State Police say the driver of a coach bus that slammed into a tractor-trailer on Interstate 95 Wednesday afternoon has died.
Henry J. Woolfson, of Hackensack, N.J.,was killed when his tour bus, carrying 42 passengers, rear-ended the truck near southbound Exit 14. Woolfson would have turned 32 years old on Thursday.
Woolfson was extricated from the bus by Norwalk firefighters and transported to Norwalk Hospital where he was pronounced dead. State Police Trooper Allen Currier said Woolfson was pinned in the bus and it took crews 15 minutes to extricate him.
Jorge Benites, who identified himself as Woolfson’s Stepfather, said the driver was an Ecuadorean immigrant who leaves behind a 1-year-old son.
“We are still in shock, can’t believe what happened,” said Benites, on a call from New Jersey. “All he liked to do was work.”
On Wednesday night, state Sen. Bob Duff, D-Norwalk, posted on Instagram that he was calling on State Police to beef up patrols in the area after the accident and another serious one earlier in the week.
On Thursday, Trooper First Class Kelly Grant said Troop G would have more focused patrols in the Stamford-to-Bridgeport area on I-95, as well as on Route 7. Grant added that State Police Traffic Services Unit will also increase its presence in the area.
Norwalk fire officials say 19 of the bus passengers were hurt in Wednesday’s crash, but their injuries were not considered life-threatening. Three were sent to Stamford Hospital and 16 were taken to Norwalk Hospital.
Grant said all of the passengers were adults, the majority from New Jersey, and that a full list of their names was not available. Nai Min Chang, 64, of New York City, was the only passenger identified in the accident summary as having “possible injuries.”
According to the summary, the bus traveling from Boston to New York City, struck the tractor-trailer truck, operated by Sarkor Umarkhod, 32, of Sharonville, Ohio, in the center lane just north of Exit 14. Umarkhod was not injured.
The bus is registered to RC Travelways Inc. of Orlando, Fla. According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, RC Travelways buses were not involved in any crashes with fatalities or injuries in the last 24 months. RC Travelways is authorized by the U.S. Department of Transportation to carry passengers for interstate service, federal records show. It also has the required $5 million insurance coverage.
The freight truck is registered to Trucking Experts of Markham, Ill., a nationwide trucking company with 150 vehicles covering 18 million miles a year, federal records show.
The cause of the accident is under investigation by the Connecticut State Police which had called in their accident reconstruction team.
