Magna, UT : 53-year-old Sheldon Mark Dickinson killed after his car collided with a dump truck in Magna on Wednesday afternoon, May 18, 2016
A man was killed after his car collided with a dump truck Wednesday afternoon in Magna.
About 3:55 pm., Sheldon Mark Dickinson, 53, of Magna, was driving north on 8400 West near 3100 South and veered into oncoming traffic, Unified Police Lt. Lex Bell said.
Dickinson's car crashed head-on into a dump truck, and he died before he could be taken to a hospital, Bell said.
It's possible Dickinson suffered a medical episode shortly before the crash, according to Bell. He said a witness reported Dickinson's car was "swerving a little bit" moments before the car went into southbound traffic. The investigation into what caused the crash is ongoing.
The impact pushed the dump truck through a fence and onto a church lawn. The dump truck driver was uninjured but emotionally "shaken up, as you can imagine," Bell said.
"Having nothing he could do when this happened has got to be terrible for him," Bell said, adding that there wasn't enough time or room on the road for the truck to swerve.
Police closed traffic in both directions on 8400 West between 2700 South and 2100 South while investigating the scene. The road remained closed in that area for more than three hours, Bell said.
