Merrimac, MA : 74-year-old Haverhill man died in car crash near 60 West Main St. on Wednesday afternoon, September 28, 2016

A 74-year-old Haverhill man was killed Wednesday afternoon when the car he was driving crashed into a tree near 60 West Main St.

His name is being withheld pending notification of his family, police said. The victim was the sole occupant of the car, a late-model Toyota.

He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Merrimac police are investigating the accident, with assistance from the state police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section. Police and firefighters responded to the crash at 1:52 p.m.

Parts of West Main Street, which is part of Route 110, were closed Wednesday afternoon.
