At least 3 dead, more than 25 injured in multi-vehicle crash near Hillsville Virginia
Three people are dead and 25 people were taken to the hospital following a 96-vehicle pileup Sunday on Interstate 77 south, troopers said.Sister station WSLS said the three victims have been identified as William Sosebee, 33, of Allen, Ky.; Kathern Worley, 71, of Iron Station, N.C., and Andrew Katbi, 24, of Delphos, Ohio.
The chain of 18 separate crashes started around 1 p.m. between mile markers 5 and 6 in Carroll County. Fire was seen in one section of the crash involving six cars and a tractor-trailer.
The road was shut down from mile marker 14 to the North Carolina state line. The crash happened only on the southbound side, but all three northbound lanes were closed for a time as well.
Tow trucks were still removing vehicles several hours after the crash.Eighteen people were taken to Northern Hospital of Surry County, where they were treated and released for minor injuries.
Other patients were taken to Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem and Twin County Regional Hospital in Galax.
