Victoria, TX : California driver dies after collision with 18-wheeler in Karnes County on Monday afternoon, January 2, 2017

The driver of an SUV that hit a tractor-trailer near U.S. 77 and Farm-to-Market Road 445 on Monday afternoon, died from his injuries.

The driver was identified as Santos Villegas Isidore, 45, of Shafter, Calif. He was pronounced dead at 5:11 p.m. at Otto Kaiser Memorial Hospital in Karnes County, according to the Department of Public Safety.

Two women who were passengers in the 1998 Ford Explorer were injured. The passengers, Magdalena Ozuna, 38; and her mother Juanita Ozuna, 66, both also of Shafter, Calif., were taken to Citizens Medical Center.

Isidore was southbound on the highway when the SUV's left front tire blew out, causing the vehicle to veer across the median, sideswiping a tractor-trailer heading north. The vehicle then went under the tractor-trailer, striking the rear axle and knocking it off. The tractor-trailer went onto the highway's shoulder and landed in the brush. The Ford Explorer was still on the highway, said Department of Public Safety Trooper Ruben San Miguel said.

Arnulfo Olivo, 59, of Donna, the owner and driver of the tractor-trailer, refused medical attention at the scene, San Miguel said.
