A Gainesville motorcyclist was hospitalized Wednesday evening when he collided with an SUV on Newberry Road, the Florida Highway Patrol reported.

The accident was reported at 6:21 at Newberry Road near Southwest 122nd Street, Sgt. Tracy Pace said.

Rebecca Tregony, 25, of Gainesville, was driving a 2001 Chevrolet SUV out of a subdivision when she crossed the westbound lanes and turned onto the eastbound lanes.

Thomas Fritz, 26, of Gainesville, was driving a 2003 Honda, headed east. He was unable to avoid the SUV and hit it in the back. He was wearing a helmet and was thrown from the motorcycle, Pace said. His injuries were non-life threatening.

The motorcycle’s gas tank spilled fuel, which was ignited by a muffler that fell off, Pace said. The fire was quickly extinguished.

Fritz was taken to UF Health Shands Hospital while Tregony was cited for violation of right of way, Pace added.
