Miami, FL : Two cop-involved crashes clog I-95 at 95th Street on April, Saturday 1st 2017
Two police-involved Interstate 95 crashes at Northwest 95th Street, one involving a Miami-Dade police car in the northbound express lanes and one involving a City of Miami motorcycle officer on the southbound side, caused a massive traffic backup Saturday afternoon.
The crashes occurred around 2:17 p.m. and 2:47 p.m., according to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue’s call list. No injuries required trauma alert transport.
According to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, a car tangled with the Miami motorcycle cop, who was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital.
On the other side of I-95, a Miami-Dade police say a Miami-Dade officer had left his car to help with a three-car accident involving a black Mercedes Benz SUV, a blue Chevrolet Cruz and a white Jeep Liberty. Suddenly, a black Honda zooming north in the express lanes swerved way right to careen off the police car and the Chevy. He hit the drivers of the the Mercedes and the Chevy, too.
Weston’s Joel Walker, 74, and Miami’s Melba Vasquez, 22, were taken to Northside Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Police say the Honda driver was on his way home from a double shift.
Florida’s Move Over law requires moving over a lane from any stopped police car, fire rescue vehicle, ambulance, tow truck, garbage or utility vehicle. If changing lanes isn’t safely possible, drivers are to slow to 20 mph below the speed limit.
