Montfort, WI : 2,000 gallons of diesel fuel spills during Jeep vs. semi crash in Grant County on Tuesday morning, March 10, 2015
More than 2,000 gallons of diesel fuel were spilled near Montfort after fog caused a vehicle versus semitrailer crash Tuesday morning, Grant County officials said.
Just after 7 a.m., a 1998 Jeep Cherokee owned by Pamela Schmitz, of Muscoda, was being driven by Roseanna Schmitz, 31, also of Muscoda.
Roseanna Schmitz was headed south on County Road G in the town of Wingville when she missed the stop sign at Highway 18 because of fog and went through the intersection, officials said.
The Jeep hit a Kwik Trip semi that was going west on Highway 18, which caused the semitrailer to spill about 2,000 gallons of diesel fuel onto the road, according to the release.
The semi driver, Chad Cooper, 44, of Orfordville, was not injured, officials said. The Jeep overturned and stopped in the north ditch, where Roseanna Schmitz and her passenger, Brittinee Schmitz, 20, of Muscoda, were extricated by the Montfort Jaws of Life.
Roseanna Schmitz and Brittinee Schmitz were transported to Upland Hills Health Center in Dodgeville, according to the release. Officials did not release the extent of their injuries.
Fennimore and Montfort fire assisted at the scene, officials said. The Wisconsin State Patrol inspector, Grant County Hazardous Materials Team and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources also helped at the scene.
The crash remains under investigation.
