Baltimore, MD : One dead, one hurt in wild crash on Baltimore sidewalk on Tuesday, April 5, 2016

A 31-year-old man died and a passenger was injured when their car hit two parking meters, a set of concrete stairs and the front of a restaurant in Southwest Baltimore overnight Tuesday, police said.

Police identified the man who died as Donte James, of the 900 block of Bethune Road in Cherry Hill. A 30-year-old man who was in the passenger seat was taken to a hospital, and he is listed in stable condition, police said. No other injuries were reported.

James was driving a Toyota Solara south in the 200 block of South Monroe Street in Carrollton Ridge at 12:16 a.m. when it left the road and struck a pair of parking meters on the sidewalk, police said. Then it hit a set of concrete steps, went airborne and crashed into the front window of Bay Island Crab Shack in the 1900 block of West Pratt Street, police said.

Neither family for James nor the restaurant could be reached Tuesday morning.

The car landed on Monroe Street, police said.

City police are investigating the crash. They did not provide information on the cause or say whether high speed played a role.
