Jefferson County, MO : St. Louis woman dies in crash on I-55 near Pevely on Friday night, November 25, 2016

A St. Louis woman died Friday night after her overturned car was hit by another car whose driver had braked and tried to swerve out of the way on Interstate 55 near Pevely.

The Missouri Highway Patrol said Audra M. Evans, 37, died at Barnes-Jewish Hospital after she was taken there by helicopter.

The patrol said Evans' car was on its side from a previous accident in the left lane of northbound I-55 when it was struck in the roof by a car driven by Brittney E. Kopf, 23, of O'Fallon, Mo.

Shortly before, the patrol said, Evans had braked suddenly to avoid striking the rear of an unknown vehicle and overturned after striking cables in the center median. Evans' car came to rest on its passenger side facing east.

Kopf was taken with a minor injury to Mercy Hospital Jefferson. The crash was about 8:45 p.m. north of Highway Z.
