48-year-old man who died following a three-vehicle collision on Wednesday, July 5, 2017

Van Alstyne Police have identified the 48-year-old man who died following a three-vehicle collision on U.S. Highway 75 Wednesday afternoon.

James Rainbolt, of Canyon Lake, was pronounced dead at the scene after he was ejected from the passenger seat of a black Toyota Corolla. Van Alstyne Police Chief Tim Barnes previously said the collision occurred at about 12:45 p.m. when the Corolla struck a truck that belongs to a contractor for the Texas Department of Transportation and then hit a blue Ford Expedition.

Barnes said witnesses reported the Corolla was traveling at a high rate of speed when it neared the southbound overpass for FM 121. The truck was on the left side signaling for a work crew ahead, and Barnes said the Corolla attempted to avoid the collision but hit the truck then collided with the SUV.

The SUV, which was pulling a travel trailer, jackknifed, and the trailer flipped to its side blocking the southbound lanes and raising the back of the SUV. The wrecked Corolla spun around to face north, and the passenger was ejected, landing next to the truck. Barnes previously said the passenger was not wearing a seat belt.

Nine people, including five children from the SUV, were transported to local hospitals. Barnes said the injuries did not appear to be life-threatening, and the children, whose ages ranged from five to 15, were transported as a precautionary measure. Barnes said via email he did not have an update Thursday on the conditions of the injured.
