Union County, NJ : One person killed and three injured in wild truck chase in Elizabeth early Saturday morning, July 9, 2016

One person was killed and three were injured when the cab of a tractor-trailer crashed head-on into a car after a pursuit by police in Elizabeth early Saturday morning, authorities said.

The incident, which occurred around midnight, first began when the truck hit a another car in the area of First Street and Elizabeth Avenue, according to the Union County Prosecutor's Office.

Police responded to the scene after the first collision and pursued the truck, which continued down the road crashing into several other parked cars, before crashing head-on into the car with three occupants at North and Newark avenues, the prosecutor's office said. One of the three occupants, an adult male, was killed, and the other two were injured, according to the prosecutor's office.

During the pursuit, police fired at the truck, hitting the driver, authorities said.

The truck driver was taken to the hospital, authorities said. His injuries were not life threatening, they said.

Rolando Rodriguez, 52, who lives on nearby Sheridan Ave, said he saw the aftermath of the fatal crash.

Rodriguez said when he got to the scene he could hear someone from inside the severely-damaged car pleading for help.

He said he saw police take the truck driver out of the cab and place him in handcuffs before putting him on a stretcher.

The truck belongs to Dunns Logistics, a carrier based in Henderson, Nevada.

A regional manager for the company said he was aware of an incident involving one of the company's drivers. The manager, who did not want his name used, declined comment until he could see the police report

The incident is being investigated by the Union County Prosecutor's Office the Union County Sheriff's Office and the Elizabeth Police Department.

Police said were not aware of any pedestrians or bystanders injured in the crashes.
