8-year-old bicyclist struck by truck, hospitalized

An 8-year-old boy was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after being hit by a pick-up truck on Woodfield Drive, near Sahara Avenue and Nellis Boulevard, on Monday evening.

Police said the accident occurred at 6:35 p.m. and that it appears that the child was at fault.According to Las Vegas Metro police, the child was traveling southbound across Woodfield from a posted stop sign at Minden. A Dodge pick-up truck was traveling westbound on Woodfield crossing Minden when the child was in the vehicle's path, police said.
Police said the front end of the truck struck the left side of the bicyclist, causing the boy to be forced on the ground.
The driver was not impaired and detectives noted the child was not wearing a helmet.
"He was riding his bike in the neighborhood. Unfortunately, it looks like he may have run a stop sign. The vehicle was traveling on a through street with no reason for him to stop," Metro Sgt. Richard Strader said.
The child was taken to University Medical Center in critical condition.
Police said the driver involved was not expected to face charges in the accident.
