Sacramento, CA : Calif. teen riding bike to school struck and killed in crash on Tuesday, November 15th 2016
A 15-year-old high school student was struck and killed by a vehicle in Pacoima, Calif., Tuesday morning.
The teen, identified as Saul Lopez, was riding his bicycle to school as two trucks crashed and struck him as he crossed the street in the crosswalk, NBC 4 Los Angeles reports.
One truck was heading eastbound while the other was traveling southbound on a different road and the two crashed in the middle of an intersection. Police believe one driver did not adhere to a traffic stop, NBC 4 says.
The teenager became trapped beneath a pickup truck, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. He was later freed, but died at the scene, NBC 4 notes.
Lopez, of San Fernando, was identified by family members who arrived at the scene.His parents stated that he was on his way to his high school, Vaughn Next Century Learning Center, which was a block from where the crash occurred.
On a GoFundMe page for Saul, Vaughn International Studies Academy teacher Jamie Dewaele wrote, “He was well-liked by everyone that knew him and one couldn’t help but smile when he walked into a room.”
The GoFundMe page was already seeing results by Tuesday night, surpassing the $15,000 goal and landing at over $20,000.
A member of the Los Angeles Police Department said that due to the traumatic nature of the crash, police called on a crisis response team to speak with the parties involved and those at the victim’s high school, according to NBC.
One female driver suffered a minor injury but was taken to the hospital in good condition, NBC notes.
