Melville, NY : Baldwin man arrested after Holland Tunnel DWI crash on Sundayy, January, 28th 2018
A Baldwin man was arrested after driving onto a sidewalk and crashing through a metal fence while exiting the Holland Tunnel early Sunday in Manhattan, Port Authority police said.
The crash occurred at 3:06 a.m. at the Holland Tunnel exit at the intersection of Varick and Canal streets and the keys were still in the ignition of the 2008 Honda Civic, engine running, when officers arrived at the scene, police said.
The driver, Raymond Nicholas J. Nelson, 24, declined medical attention offered by a responding EMS crew.
Police said officers smelled alcohol, Nelson exhibited slurred speech, and a subsequent breath analyzer reading showed he had a .145 percent blood alcohol content. The legal threshold in New York is .08 percent.
Nelson was charged with drunken driving, reckless driving and driving on the sidewalk, Port Authority police said.
Arraignment details were not available.
Photos from the scene showed the car, perched atop remnants of the fence, passenger side wheels several feet off the ground.
