A Mineral Point woman was killed and two other women were seriously injured in a head-on collision that occurred at 3:56 p.m. Wednesday at the junction of northbound Route 21 and Amvets Drive in Jefferson County.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the fatal accident occurred when a 1990 Chevrolet Caprice Classic driven by Linda J. DeClue, 56, of Potosi, was traveling southbound on Route 21 when an unknown vehicle, also traveling southbound, slowed suddenly to make a left turn onto Amvets Drive directly in front of DeClue's car.
In an attempt to avoid a crash DeClue swerved to the left and struck head-on a northbound 2001 Hyundai Elantra driven by Dawn C. Hoekstra, 55, of De Soto.
A passenger in DeClue's car — Sharon J. Huff, 58, of Mineral Point — was taken to Mercy Hospital Jefferson by Valle Ambulance where she was pronounced dead at 4:41 p.m. by Dr. Nicholas Stahlschmidt.
DeClue and Hoekstra were taken by emergency helicopter — DeClue by Life Flight and Hoekstra by Arch — to Barnes Jewish Hospital where both were treated for serious injuries.
The patrol reports that Huff, DeClue and Hoekstra were all wearing seat belts at the time of the accident.
