A 20-year-old San Pablo man was in custody Saturday after being arrested on charges of vehicular manslaughter after allegedly fleeing the scene of a fatal crash in Richmond on Interstate 80 Friday.
Jesus Sarabia of San Pablo was arrested Friday night at his home following a crash that killed a man driving a Toyota Tacoma at 9:52 p.m. on westbound I-80 near Solano Avenue, said Officer Sean Wilkenfeld of the California Highway Patrol.
Following the crash, CHP officers found a 2013 Nissan Altima abandoned on a city street near the Cutting Boulevard exit, a few miles from the crash site, Wilkenfeld said. The suspect apparently run away.
Sarabia had reported the car stolen but Wilkenfeld said officers found items in the car that were linked to Sarabia and they determined that he had been driving at the time of the crash.
In addition to manslaughter, Sarabia was arrested on charges of felony hit and run, filing a false police report and providing false information to officers. He was booked at the Martinez Detention Facility, Wilkenfeld said.
The crash victim, who has not been identified pending notification of the driver’s family, was taken by helicopter to a hospital but died.
