Richmond, VA : Darryl D. Farmer, 22, killed, and Darryl W. Rusten, 52, and one child injured in car crash following police chase on U.S 17 in Essex County on Tuesday evening, March 29, 2016
A fatal crash in Essex County Tuesday evening began with a routine speeding investigation in Caroline County, authorities said.
Darryl D. Farmer, 22, of Ruther Glen died when a 2010 Dodge Journey he was riding in crashed into a tree while the driver was fleeing from police, according to police.
Caroline County Sheriff Tony Lippa said a deputy was operating radar on State Route 207 in an area known as “The Flats” west of Bowling Green when a vehicle came through at 78 mph in a 55 mph zone.
As the deputy prepared to make a traffic stop, Lippa said, the driver sped up and the pursuit was on. The pursuit went to the U.S. 301 Bypass and then onto U.S 17 into Essex.
During the incident, Lippa said, the driver nearly struck two other vehicles and avoided spike strip put down by other deputies in an attempt to flatten the suspect vehicle’s tires.
About a dozen miles into Essex, the Dodge went off the road to the right and struck a tree around 6:45 p.m.
Lippa said the deputy backed off twice during the pursuit in part because of his familiarity with the road’s curviness.
Farmer, who was wearing a seat belt, was dead at the scene. Darryl W. Rusten, 52, of Ruther Glen, and a 10-year-old girl were both flown to VCU Medical Center to be treated for serious injuries. Rusten was listed in serious condition Wednesday. The girl’s condition was not available.
Lippa said it is his understanding that the car occupants are related, though he isn’t sure of the relation.
“Our hearts go out to the family that is suffering because of the poor decision made by this driver,” Lippa said.
The preliminary investigation shows that Rusten is not a licensed driver. He has been convicted three times for driving without a license in Caroline, court records show, and has a lengthy record in Maryland that includes a number of driving offenses.
State police are investigating the crash. No charges had been filed as of Wednesday.
