One dead in crash off Kearny Mesa freeway
A 27-year-old man died and a 24-year-old woman suffered major injuries Saturday night when their car overturned multiple times and skidded off southbound state Route 163 in Kearny Mesa, officials said.The crash occurred about 6 p.m. The woman driver of a 2008 Toyota Scion drove up an embankment while trying to merge on to westbound Route 52, a CHP dispatcher said. She overcorrected and the car started to spin and then overturned.The male passenger was ejected from the car and died at the scene. The driver was also ejected. She was taken to a hospital with major injuries along with a woman passenger who suffered minor injuries.Witnesses reported the vehicle on its roof, with one person pinned beneath it and another person not moving near state Route 52, the California Highway Patrol website said.CHP officers blocked traffic from southbound Route 163 to westbound Route 52 during an investigation. The ramp was opened about 9:40 p.m.An unrelated accident occurred about half an hour later in the same area, when a car northbound on Route 163 reportedly scraped the center divider for about 100 yards, then swerved across the lanes. It stopped about 200 feet off the shoulder, in a field. The driver went to a hospital with minor to moderate injuries, a dispatcher said.
