Falling Waters, W.V : Eight hurt in four-vehicle Berkeley County crash on I-81 on Friday morning, February 17, 2017
Falling Waters, West Virginia
Eight people were taken to hospitals after a four-vehicle crash on Interstate 81 in northern Berkeley County Friday morning that tied up traffic for hours, according to the Berkeley County Sheriff's Department and emergency officials.
Seven victims were treated at Berkeley Medical Center in Martinsburg, and another person was taken to Meritus Medical Center near Hagerstown for nonlife-threatening injuries, the sheriff's department said in a news release.
Three other people involved in the crash near the West Virginia Welcome Center along the southbound lanes of the highway were released with no apparent injuries, the sheriff's office said.
The crash investigation determined that a vehicle traveling north on I-81 crossed the median of the highway into southbound lanes and struck the cargo section of a tractor-trailer, dislodging a portion of the trailer, the release said.
Although the truck driver was then able to safely maneuver to the right shoulder of the highway, two additional vehicles were unable to avoid the crash, the sheriff's department said.
Interstate 81 near the Welcome Center in Berkeley County, W.Va., was closed to traffic for several hours, as rescue workers responded to the accident, according to a Berkeley County Emergency Services supervisor.
The accident was reported at 6:33 a.m. at the 25-mile marker, which is about a mile south of the Potomac River.
The highway was reopened to traffic at 9:49 a.m., the supervisor said.
