Man killed was driving dead in Atlanta Georgia

The South Carolina man killed by a hit-and-run driver on I-20 in Newton County early Tuesday was driving a car belonging to a man later found dead in northwest Alabama, authorities said.According to the Georgia State Patrol, investigators believe that William Clark Hildreth, 44, of Fort Mill, S.C., lost control of the Chevrolet Impala he was driving on I-20 eastbound at Alcovy Road around 2:25 a.m. Tuesday and struck the median wall.

"This caused the vehicle to spin and come to rest facing west in the eastbound lanes," the State Patrol said in a statement.

Hildreth got out of the Impala and was crossing the Interstate on foot when he was hit by a red or burgundy sport-utility vehicle. The driver of the SUV left the scene after the accident.

Investigators discovered that the Impala Hildreth was driving belonged to a man in Haleyville, Ala., northwest of Birmingham.Haleyville police Chief Kyle Reogas told the AJC Wednesday that Hildreth “was unknown to local authorities until we received information that Hildreth was involved in an accident in Georgia and was driving a vehicle registered to Danny Joe Baxter of Haleyville.”

Reogas said Haleyville police went to Baxter’s home and discovered the 57-year-old man’s body.
“At this point, we are attempting to determine the cause and manner of death of Mr. Baxter,” Reogas said.
