Two people were killed in a two-vehicle wreck on Hwy. 53 in Pender County early Friday morning.
The wreck took place just before 4:30 a.m. about two miles west of Maple Hill.
According to First Sgt. CK Parks with the State Highway Patrol, a 2006 Acura was traveling eastbound on Hwy. 53 when it crossed into oncoming traffic and hit a box truck.
Two adults in the Acura were killed. A 1-year-old in the vehicle wasn't injured but was taken to the hospital as a precaution.
Parks said the child was in a rear-facing seat, which likely saved the child's life.
The driver of the box truck was uninjured.
Parks said that alcohol is not a factor and that the investigation is ongoing.
The names of those who died are being withheld until family can be contacted.
