Edwardsville, IL : Driver seriously injured in Edwardsville crash at the intersection of Illinois Route 157 and Meridian Road on Friday morning, September 26, 2014
A two-vehicle accident near Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Friday morning required one driver to be airlifted to a St. Louis hospital.
Edwardsville Fire Department officials received a call at approximately 9:40 a.m. Friday to respond to the crash at the intersection of Illinois Route 157 and Meridian Road, according to Edwardsville Fire Capt. James Whiteford. The Edwardsville police, Glen Carbon fire and Glen Carbon police departments provided mutual aid.
Edwardsville Police Lt. Mike Fillback said an Infiniti G35 traveling southbound on Route 157 struck a Lincoln Town Car in what Whiteford described it as a “t-bone style” collision. The Town Car was hit on the driver’s side door as it was turning east onto Route 157, according to Fillback. The collision caused the Town Car to spin around, striking a third vehicle in the process.
Based on witness reports, the driver of the Infiniti was cited for running a red light, a $120 fine, Fillback said. The driver showed no indication of impairment at the time of the accident, according to the police report.
The driver of the Town Car, a female, sustained serious injuries in the crash, Fillback said, and was transported to Saint Louis University Hospital via ARCH helicopter.
“Her injuries were considered serious because of the impact,” Fillback said. “As far as visibly, she had a cut to her hand. But some internal injuries were a possibility.”
The other two drivers reported no injuries and refused medical service, according to Fillback.
A public relations representative with Saint Louis University Hospital declined to provide an update on the driver’s condition.
