Haines City, FL : One woman in critical condition in semi tractor-trailer and a small vehicle shut down Highway 27 on Friday April 15 2016


Traffic accidents, both resulting in serious injuries, in Haines City and Lake Wales shut down two sections of U.S. 27 Friday morning.
In the Haines City accident, a car collided with a semi-trailer, leaving a Davenport woman in critical condition.
A 2010 bronze Honda Civic driven by Erika Carranza-Garcia, 27, was heading south on U.S. 27 just before Holly Hill Road about 3:30 a.m. when it crossed the center median and hit a white 2015 International semi-trailer, according to Polk County Sheriff's Office reports.Carranza-Garcia, of 1425 Power Line Road, was taken to Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center in critical condition.
The driver of the semi, Scott Homer, 53, of Marion, New York, was uninjured.
More than 100 gallons of diesel fuel spilled on the highway, which was shut down from Holly Hill Road to Holly Hull Fruit Road for a number of hours.
The investigation is ongoing.
The one-vehicle Lake Wales accident resulted in the shutdown of U.S. 27 South lanes at State Road 60.
A white, 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt belonging to TCS Communications LLC was heading north on U.S. 27 before 6 a.m. Friday when it entered the grassy median around the Blue Star Lodge, said Lt. David Black of the Lake Wales Police Department.
The vehicle then crossed the southbound lanes and hit the concrete barricades around the southwest pillar under the SR 60 overpass, he said.
The driver, Dale Richard May, 55, of 3331 Harbor Beach Drive in Lake Wales, sustained serious injuries and was transported to Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center.
