An Aynor/Conway- area 17-year-old girl was killed in a single vehicle crash Friday night.

Chassidy McDowell died after a rollover crash happened about 10:20 p.m. on U.S. 701 North, near Poplar Church Road in Conway, according to Tony Hendrick, deputy coroner with the Horry County Coroner’s Office.

She was pronounced dead at the scene from injuries suffered during the crash, Hendrick said.

McDowell was the front seat passenger in a 2007 Chervolet truck. The driver was taken to an area hospital following the crash, according to Lance Cpl. David Jones with the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The two were headed north on U.S. 701 and neither were wearing their seat belts when the crash happened, Jones said.

The driver went off the road struck a mailbox, over corrected, then went back onto the road, went off again and struck a ditch, authorities said. The vehicle then overturned, Jones said.

The driver’s condition was unknown Saturday morning, and the crash remains under investigation by the SCHP.
