Rockledge, FL : 38-year-old man in bike lane killed in wrong-way hit-and-run early Monday, February 6, 2017
A 38-year-old Rockledge bicyclist was struck and killed by a vehicle going the wrong way on Barnes Boulevard in Rockledge early Monday, police said.
Just before 12:30 a.m., Christopher Holton was riding his bike in the bike lane when he was struck from behind by a wrong-way vehicle that fled the scene, according to Rockledge Police.
The vehicle suspected in the hit-and-run was found a short distance away.
"He inadvertantly came back to the scene, and we did what we had to do when we identified him as potentially being involved in the incident," Rocklege Police Chief Joseph LaSata said.
Two people were driving along U.S. 1 on Sunday night and witnessed the crash.
"It was scary," Angelina Dana said. "(The driver) just kept going. I couldn't believe he didn't realize he was on the wrong side of the road."
Police were questioning the driver, who was being cooperative, but not describing him as a suspect at this time, they said.
Investigators are waiting for the results of a toxicology report to help determine whether any criminal charges will follow, police said.
