WATERBURY, CT : Two people who were killed in a tragic crash in Waterbury on Wednesday, August 2, 2017
Police have identified the two people who were killed in a tragic crash in Waterbury on Wednesday night.
Police say at around 7 p.m., 32-year-old Norman Roberts, of Waterbury, was driving a 2017 Hyundai Elantra east on Homer Street when the head-on collision occurred with a 1999 Subaru Forester, driven by George Martinez, of Waterbury, who was traveling west on the same road.
Martinez was pronounced dead on scene. Roberts was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Police say there were four passengers also in the Forester. Zairano Martinez, 43, was injured and taken to Waterbury Hospital where she is currently in stable condition.
Martinez’ 18-year-old daughter was taken to Waterbury Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Martinez’ 10-year-old daughter was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital in critical condition but later transferred to CCMC in Hartford where she is now in stable condition.
Security cameras at a nearby gas station captured this crash. The manager of the gas station showed News 8 some of that surveillance video. A backup copy is now in the hands of police. Investigators will look at that hoping it provides some answers as to what caused this deadly crash.
As the manager of the gas station took another look at the video, he was startled by the impact of the crash. A ball of white smoke could be seen towards the back of the screen.
“Oh my God,” Sharjeel Khan said. “That was horrible.”
