San Bernardino County, CA : CHP officer injured in San Bernardino chain-reaction crash on the southbound 15 Freeway between the 10 Freeway and Jurupa Avenue in Ontario on Tuesday, 15th January 2019

Two California Highway Patrol officers escaped with minor injuries Tuesday night, Jan. 15, suffered in separate but similar crashes in San Bernardino County.

The first crash happened about 8:35 p.m. on the southbound 15 Freeway between the 10 Freeway and Jurupa Avenue in Ontario. The 40-year-old male officer was sitting in his patrol car while investigating an earlier collision when a 24-year-old driving a Chevrolet Malibu lost control on the wet highway and skidded onto the shoulder, where the Malibu struck a tow truck and the patrol car, Officer Mike Migliacci said.

The patrol car was pushed down an embankment, and the officer suffered minor injuries, Migliacci said.

The second crash happened just after 11 p.m. on the right shoulder of the westbound 10 Freeway east of the 215 Freeway in San Bernardino.

A motorist was driving a 2000 Toyota Camry in the right lane about 60 mph in the rain when he collided with another vehicle, Officer Sean Hodder said. The Camry continued toward the shoulder, where it struck the left rear of a parked CHP cruiser as an officer investigated a previous crash. The officer was standing in the doorway of the patrol car, and the impact knocked him down, Hodder said. The patrol car then struck a tow truck.

The officer complained of pain and was off duty Wednesday, Hodder said.
