Queens, NY : One dead, toddler critically injured after driver runs red light, plows into victims on Queens sidewalk on Monday, Oct 5, 2015
An out-of-control driver ran a red light and plowed into two women and a 2-year-old girl on a Queens sidewalk on Monday — killing one of the adults and critically injuring the toddler, police sources said.
One woman was holding the toddler when the white SUV jumped the curb and slammed into the trio at the corner of Atlantic Ave. and 108 St., witnesses said.
Moments before, the 43-year-old woman driving the SUV had run a red light on Atlantic Ave. and was struck by a black Kia being driven north on 108 St. by a 23-year-old woman, police said.
The impact sent the SUV careening onto the sidewalk.
Witnesses said the struck woman appeared to throw the child off to the side in an attempt to save the tiny girl from the impact.
“I saw her take the baby and throw her to the sidewalk,” Miriam Sierra, 70, said. “The woman was in really bad shape ...The baby was crying on the floor, she wanted to be picked up.”
“(The woman) wasn't moving at all,” witness Richie Brown, 30, said.
The three pedestrians were taken to Jamaica Hospital, where one, a 52-year-old woman, died police said.
The toddler was listed in critical but stable condition with a leg injury, according to police. The other pedestrian, a 58-year-old woman, and the two drivers were both in stable condition, police said.
