Gibsonton, FL : Four people were ejected from a vehicle when it collided with a U-Haul truck on U.S. 41 Friday evening October 24th 2014
Four people were ejected from a vehicle when it collided with a U-Haul truck Friday night on U.S. 41, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
Giovanni Escobedo, 17, of Ruskin was driving a Lincoln SUV with nine passengers south on U.S. 41 and tried to make a left turn around 6:59 p.m. onto Symmes Road. A U-Haul truck traveling north on U.S. 41, driven by Jimmy Bunn, 57, of Tampa struck the side of the SUV.
According to authorities, the collision threw Brittany Hernandez, 8; Anjelica Martinez, 1; Magaly Silva, 5; and Elijah Potts, 14, from the Lincoln. None was wearing seat belts.
Elizabeth Martinez, 24; Chris Solis, 15; Anthony Sandoval, 14; Lorenzo Martinez, 4; and Miguel Rivera, 14, were also in the vehicle.
The SUV occupants were all taken to Tampa General Hospital, four in critical condition, according to Hillsborough County Fire Rescue.
Bunn, a cabinetmaker, said he was going about 45 mph and that the light was green as he approached it.
Having just picked up the U-Haul, Bunn said he was looking at the side-view mirrors to see if they needed adjusting. When he looked up, he saw the Lincoln SUV crossing in front of him.
"The last thing I remember was thinking 'No, really, you're going to do this?' " he said.
The front end of the U-Haul was smashed, as was the passenger side of the Lincoln between the wheels.
The 20-foot-long U-Haul was loaded with cabinets from Bunn's shop that he was going to drive to West Virginia on Saturday, he said.
Bunn's injuries were minimal and included some bruising and a cut on his head. He declined to go to the hospital after the accident.
The occupants of the Lincoln SUV could not be reached for comment Saturday.
Escobedo was ticketed for driving without a valid license, driving without insurance, failure to yield, child restraint violations and seat belt violations for those under 18 years old not restrained, the Highway Patrol said.
