A Holts Summit, Missouri, woman apparently lost control of the SUV she was driving with her two daughters in the back seat early Monday, crashing the vehicle into an oncoming car. The 1-year-old girl in her car died, and an infant was seriously injured.
Beth Mandry, 29, was driving east on Route M in Cole County near Wardsville when the Tahoe went off the right side of the road. Mandry apparently overcorrected, crossed the center line and then crashed into an oncoming car driven by Sharon Twehous, 51, of Jefferson City, said Highway Patrol Cpl. Morgan Patterson.
Brailyn Baugher, 1, who was riding in a car seat, was pronounced dead at the scene. Brailyn's infant sister, Makayla Hayes, was taken to University Hospital where she was listed in good condition on Monday afternoon. Mandry was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown from the vehicle. Her condition was unavailable.
Twehous was taken to SSM Health St. Mary's Hospital in Jefferson City where she was listed in moderate condition.
Patterson said police were alerted to the crash by an automated collision notification system in Twehous's 2015 Mercedes .
Patterson said there was no suspicion that drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash, which was being investigated by the Major Crash Investigation Unit of the Highway Patrol. No charges were pending.
Patterson said Mandry had a limited memory of what happened before the crash.
Route M was shut down from approximately 6:30 to 8:30 a.m., Patterson said.
