Montgomery, AL : Sycamore High School died in a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 71 on Sunday morning August 23 2015
A recent graduate from Sycamore High School died in a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 71 in Montgomery on Sunday morning.
Amy Sanker, 18, graduated from Sycamore in 2015. She is listed in the University of Cincinnati student directory but did not get the chance to join other students on their first day of class Monday.
The crash happened in the southbound lanes of I-71 near the Pfeiffer Road exit around 12:30 a.m Sunday, police said. Authorities closed the roadway in the Montgomery area after the crash and reopened it around 5:30 a.m.
Ryan Dorsey, 28, of Norwood saw the crash and called 911. He said he saw Sanker's vehicle speeding and weaving in and out of lanes before the collision.
They flew passed me," Doresy told The Enquirer. "And I was doing 80 [mph]." He said the car then side-swiped another vehicle, spun out and stopped in the center lance of south I-71.
The collision was between Sanker's Toyota Corolla and a Toyota Camry driven by Daniel Kuhn, 32, police said. Sanker was partially ejected during the collision. Kuhn continued driving on the interstate and stopped in front of the Ronald Reagan exit where he called 911.
Kuhn told 911 that he didn't know where the other car came from and that his vehicle was hit on the side.
Police could not provide further details on the crash. The Hamilton County Sheriff's Office is investigating.
Amy's death will have a significant impact on our entire school community," read a statement from Sycamore community Schools. "Sycamore High School has mobilized a Building Response Team comprised of professionals trained to help with the needs of the students, parents, school personnel and graduates during this difficult time."
A moment of silence was held Monday afternoon for students at the high school and the principal met with the Sanker family, said Mallory Bonbright, chief public relations and communications officer. There is no vigil planned for Sanker at this time.
Sanker was a cheerleader at Sycamore High School, according to Bonbright. She was an honor roll student and volunteered in the Windows of Hope Service project, which provides support to families living at the Ronald McDonald House in Cincinnati.
Students involved in the project asked the families what they want to see in their hospital windows and then made paintings for them, Bonbright said.
