Macomb Township, MI : An Oakland County man was killed in a horrific single-car crash at Cambridge Drive on Saturday, April 16th, 2016
Macomb Township, Michigan
An Oakland County man was killed Saturday night in a horrific single-car crash in Macomb Township that tore his car apart, according to the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators said the motorist was driving eastbound on 23 Mile Road east of Romeo Plank Road about 9:40 p.m. when he lost control of his silver 2002 Toyota and struck a
telephone pole near Cambridge Drive.
The driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene.
“Witnesses said he was traveling at a high rate of speed, lost control of the car and struck a pole,” Sheriff Anthony Wickersham said.
Wickersham said alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the crash,
Witnesses and officials said the motorist was driving erratically at about 100 mph. The speed limit on that two-lane section of 23 Mile is 50 mph.
Witnesses said the driver appeared to be losing control of the car near Romeo Plank Road. By the time the car reached Cambridge, it began to turn sideways and then struck
the pole, according to officials.
The Toyota split apart into three pieces after striking the pole, with the engine landing in the back yard of a nearby residence and shearing the pole in half.
Aymen Khami, 30, was sitting in his back yard on Cambridge Drive with friends at the time of the incident. He said the crash sounded “like an explosion.”
“The driver skidded and then struck the curb, and the car went into the air and hit the phone pole,” Khami said.
Khami ran over to the scene to try to aid the driver, who was trapped in the wreckage. He was not moving, Khami said.
“I called out to him as I was dialing 911,” Khami said. “I’m sorry to see him pass, but it’s a good thing no one else was hurt. There’s a lot of kids in this neighborhood and people
were still walking around at that time.”
The driver was reported to be a 27-year-old man from Troy. Wickersham said detectives have been in touch with the victim’s father and girlfriend, but are still awaiting formal
identification.
