GARY, IN : 3 ejected in rollover crash on ramp from I-65 to Ridge Road on Tuesday, 20th March 2018

One man was impaled by wreckage, another man suffered life-threatening injuries and a woman was hurt when all three were ejected early Tuesday during a rollover crash, police said.

The three people, all of Chicago, were in a 2018 Chevrolet Equinox when they exited southbound Interstate 65 to Ridge Road about 5:15 a.m., failed to negotiate a curve and their vehicle rolled multiple times down an embankment.

Darrell A. Jones, 29, was impaled with a piece of door frame when he was ejected, Indiana State Police said. He was taken to Franciscan Health Crown Point and later flown by helicopter to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

Jones' brother, Anthony Meyers, 28, was taken to Methodist Hospitals Northlake Campus in Gary with life-threatening injuries, police said.

Breanna Johnson, 24, was taken to St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police were still working to determine who was driving at the time of the crash.

Alcohol or drugs might be a factor, police said. Toxicology test results were pending.

None of the injured was wearing a seat belt, which could have reduced injuries if they had been worn, police said.
