Edgewater, MD : 18-year-old man injured in an ATV crash in the 3700 block of Oak Lane on Sunday afternoon, Sep 27, 2015

An 18-year-old man has died from injures sustained in an ATV accident Sunday afternoon in Edgewater, police said Monday night.

Fire and rescue personnel responded to accident scene at about 4 p.m. in the 3700 block of Oak Lane.

Police said Jeremy A. DePhillip of Edgewater was operating the ATV at a high rate of speed when he failed to negotiate a curve, left the roadway and traveled into a wooded area, striking several trees.

DePhillip was flown to University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore with critical, life-threatening injuries, police said. He wasn't wearing any protective gear or a helmet, police said.

The cause of the crash appears to be failure to remain right of center, police said, with speed being a major contributing factor. There was no suspicion of alcohol use.
