Sarasota, FL : Multi-vehicle crash claims life of Sarasota man on Sunday, October 12, 2014
A 25-year-old Sarasota man died Sunday from injuries sustained in a multi-vehicle crash.
The incident occurred just after noon at the intersection of 17th St. and Prudence Dr. The name of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
According to a Florida Highway Patrol the man was riding a bicycle on a sidewalk just west of Prudence when he was struck by a 2005 Toyota Sienna driven by 84-year-old Edith Orenberg of Sarasota. The report states the crash was triggered by Sandra Flores when she violated Orenberg's right of way at the intersection.
Orenberg suffered serious injuries and was transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital.
Flores, a 55-year-old Bradenton resident, was not injured. She was issued a citation for failure to yield the right of way. Her vehicle, a 2008 Nissan Rogue, struck the right side of the Sienna causing Orenberg to lose control of the vehicle.
The Sienna veered onto the sidewalk where it hit the bicycle rider, knocking him through some shrubbery before pinning him up against a nearby home. The man was airlifted by helicopter to Tampa General Hospital where he later died.
A passenger in Flores vehicle was not hurt. Alcohol was not a factor in the crash according to investigators.
