Redding, CA : 85-year-old woman in critical condition after crashing into barn off Knighton Road south of Redding on Thursday evening, February 25, 2016

An 85-year-old Redding woman was in critical condition at Mercy Medical Center on Thursday evening after her car went off Interstate 5 near Knighton Road south of Redding and crashed into a barn.

That southbound crash also prompted a two-vehicle wreck in the northbound lanes, according to the California Highway Patrol.

“There are a lot of things going on,” CHP Sgt. Jack Blomquist said.
Minor injuries were reported in the separate two-vehicle crash.

According to the CHP, Elsie L. Gibble was driving south on I-5 north of the Smith Road overcrossing in the No. 1 lane around 1:15 p.m. when her 1987 Oldsmobile went off the freeway after she made an unsafe lane change.

Her car went through a wire fence before crashing into the empty barn.
Gibble, who was not wearing a seat belt, suffered major injuries in the crash and taken to the hospital.

Dispatchers reported that she was trapped inside the car, but was quickly freed.
The CHP said neither alcohol nor drugs were factors in the crash.

The names of those involved in the two-vehicle accident, who may have been distracted by the crash on the opposite side of the freeway, have not been released.

The two crashes slowed traffic in both directions for more than an hour.
The crash remains under investigation.
