The driver and two passengers killed in a rollover crash near Fallbrook while en route to a funeral service in Mexicali were publicly identified Saturday.

The driver was Jerson Ariel Duron Valeriano, 25, of South El Monte. His wife, 22-year-old Edith Duron, also of South El Monte, and Ivette Garcia, 21, of Los Angeles, were fatally injured.

A sheriff's deputy driving directly behind the group's black Ford Expedition in Fallbrook saw one of its rear tires suddenly shred to pieces on Interstate 15 near West Lilac Road shortly before 12:30 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

The SUV then careened off the freeway, tumbled over a center barrier and came to rest upside down alongside the northbound lanes, CHP public affairs Officer Jim Bettencourt said.

"They swerved hard and came across all lanes of traffic and then they hit the guardrail, the median and the car flipped straight upside down," said witness Brandon Butler.

The first thing Butler remembers seeing was a piece of the SUV's shredded tire flying through the air.
