Gadsden, AL : Motorcycle crashed in Gadsden on April, Monday 17th 2017
A police chase that began in Centre at about 8 a.m. Monday ended a short time later but a long way away in Gadsden, when the pursued motorcycle crashed in Gadsden on U.S. 411 at Walnut Street.
Centre Police Chief Kirk Blankenship said the chase began after a drug task force agent saw the motorcycle going about 112 mph through Cedar Bluff. Blankenship said he got behind the motorcycle around Walmart in Centre. He was not speeding then, the chief said, but he tried to stop him to caution him about his speed.
“When I put on my blue lights he took off,” Blankenship said. A Centre office in one of the department’s Chargers took up the chase. At times, the chief said, the motorcycle would slow around other traffic, but when other drivers saw the blue lights they got out of the way and he would speed up again. Leesburg Police Chief Brent Grimes was involved in the chase as it crossed over the county line. “He was flying,” Grimes said.
As the chase moved into Etowah County, Blankenship said, Gadsden police and Etowah County deputies did a good job of blocking intersections for safety as he sped through, at times approaching speed that first drew officers’ attention.
