Monessen, PA : Interstate 279 southbound reopens 12 hours after fatal dump truck crash on Tuesday, 17th April 2018
Interstate 279 reopened to southbound traffic shortly after 5 p.m. Tuesday, about 12 hours after a chain-reaction crash that killed a 64-year-old Munhall man.
Southbound travel on the highway also known as Parkway North will be restricted to one lane between the Bellevue/West View exit in Ross and Perrysville Avenue for the rest of the night, PennDOT spokesman Steve Cowan said.
The highway's outbound lanes had been closed from Perrysville Avenue to Camp Horne Road for most of the day.
About 5 a.m., a dump truck hit a concrete barrier in a construction zone, swerved across lanes and wound up on a guardrail, state police Trooper Melinda Bondarenka told the Trib.
The driver of the dump truck, Bryant Beiter, died in the crash . He worked for a North Huntingdon company and was hauling slag dust.
Crews plan to repair the guard rail about 1 a.m., Cowan said. He expected the work to be completed in time to reopen to two lanes by the time rush hour hits Wednesday morning.
I-279 is used by about 100,000 vehicles a day.
Traffic already has been heavier than usual along the highway — particularly the northbound lanes during afternoon rush hour.
