Cedar Mill, OR : Mother and daughter struck by a car while crossing the street in Portland on Thursday night, January 22, 2015

A Washington County sheriff's spokesman says an 80-year-old Coos Bay woman was struck in a crosswalk and fatally injured as she left a Portland-area hospital after visiting her husband.

Sgt. Bob Ray says Betty Sandra Glassman and her 54-year-old daughter from Berkeley, California, had just left Providence St. Vincent Medical Center on foot on Thursday night after visiting the older woman's husband. The daughter, Sherry Glassman-Beebe, suffered minor injuries.

Ray says the driver, 66-year-old John Lawson of Aloha, cooperated with investigators.

Investigators determined that Lawson was likely turning on a green light and failed to see the women who were crossing on a green crosswalk light. He was cited for failure to yield to a pedestrian.

After she was hit, Glassman was taken to another hospital seven miles because her injuries were so severe, she needed to go to a hospital with a better trauma unit. She was taken to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in North Portland.

In 2012, Betty and her husband Seymour were robbed while visiting Salem on their 59th wedding anniversary.

People who live near where Glassman and her daughter were hit, told KATU News they're routinely frightened by the intersection - whether it's cars speeding or people being preoccupied as they leave the hospital.

"Then when I found out two people were hurt and one of them died, it doesn't surprise me. It doesn't surprise me at all," said Don Cruz.

Glassman's daughter was taken to Legacy Emanuel as well. She was released after receiving treatment.
