A child and three adults died, and two other children were severely injured when their car crashed then burst into flames Saturday afternoon on Interstate 10 in Baker County.
Authorities didn’t identify the six victims pending notification of their next of kin. The two surviving children were in critical condition when flown by helicopter ambulance to UF Health Jacksonville, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The victims all were inside a 2001 Chevrolet Impala traveling west on I-10 at Mile Marker 317 near a rest stop shortly after 1 p.m. For as yet unknown reasons, the car veered off the roadway onto the grass shoulder. It crossed a shallow ditch, then
crashed head-on into a tree and erupted in flames that quickly engulfed the vehicle, the Highway Patrol said.
Witnesses were able to pull three children from the car, including one youngster who died at the scene. They were not able to rescue the three adults, who were dead inside the car, according to the Highway Patrol.
Jacksonville police are investigating the shooting death of a man late Saturday night in the Durkeeville neighborhood.
Officers responding to a report of gunshots found the victim in the 1200 block of Grothe Street about 10:20 p.m. The victim, whose name wasn’t released, later died at UF Health Jacksonville, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.
