One person was killed and four people were injured a motorcycle vs vehicle accident in Polk County Friday night. The Polk County Sheriff's Office said a Suzuki sport motorcycle traveling at a high rate of speed on US 27, crashed into a minivan that was turning west onto Sunshine Drive from US 27.
The crash happened around 7:50 p.m. Friday near the Lake Region mobile home park.
Officials said the motorcyclist, Miguel Ocasio, 27, was wearing a helmet, but it broke during the impact. Ocasio was pronounced dead on scene.
Officials also said the impact of the motorcycle on the minivan was so severe that all four occupants of the van were injured.
Ned Kinzie, 87, and Alice Reed, 76, have been treated and released from the hospital. However, Ralph Knott, 85, and Carolyn Knott, 83, remain in critical condition at Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center.
The roadways were shut down for five hours Friday night due to the crash.
The investigation is ongoing, but officials said excessive speed on the part of the motorcycle appears to be a factor.
