One person died Friday night in a two-vehicle crash in Fitchburg that occurred after one of the vehicles crossed the centerline of a county highway, Fitchburg police said Saturday.
A northbound vehicle occupied by two people crossed the centerline in the 2500 block of County Highway MM about 6:40 p.m. and struck a southbound vehicle occupied by one person, according to the preliminary investigation.
The driver of the vehicle that was struck was pronounced dead at the scene, Fitchburg police said in a news release.
The driver of the vehicle that crossed the centerline was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. The passenger was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, police said.
The Wisconsin State Patrol's Traffic Crash Reconstruction Team was assisting with the investigation. A portion of the highway was closed for nearly seven hours after the crash.
Police were withholding the name of the person who died pending notification of family.
