Spartanburg, South Carolina
South Carolina Highway Patrol troopers said they are investigating a fatal collision on Wednesday that killed one woman and was caused by a driver under the influence.
Troopers said they were called to the scene of an accident on East Blackstock Road at Bradford Drive around 4:15 p.m.
Troopers said a pickup truck headed south ran into the back of a stopped car in the turning lane, causing the car to cross the center line. A car traveling in the opposite direction hit the victim's car head-on, troopers said.
All three drivers involved were taken to the hospital by paramedics, troopers said. They said the driver of the car hit by the pickup truck died at the hospital.
Spartanburg County Coroner Rusty Clevenger identified the deceased driver as Peggy Garrett, 75, of Moore. Clevenger said an autopsy will be scheduled soon.
Troopers said the driver of the pickup truck was 43-year-old John Newman, of Pauline. They said he was charged with felony driving under the influence resulting in death.
In court, troopers said Newman was going 70 mph at the time of the crash. He also admitted to taking prescription medication and drinking alcohol before the crash, according to FOX Carolina's Derek Dellinger who was in court on Thursday.
Solicitor Barry Barnette said Newman caused a hit-and-run before the fatal collision.
The driver of the other car was injured but a child inside the car was OK, troopers said.
The crash remains under investigation by the Highway Patrol's MAIT Team.
Online jail records show Newman was booked into the detention center Thursday morning on the felony DUI charge and two counts of unlawful possession/distribution of drugs. He went before a bond court judge and was giving a $20,000 surety bond with home detention.
