A 77-year-old Ocala man was killed in crash on South U.S. 441 Saturday night when another driver failed to stop for a red light, the Florida Highway Patrol reported
Vernon Goin Jr., 77, was killed in the crash, according to an FHP media release. Miguel Popoca, of Ocala, a 16-year-old passenger in the 2000 Hyundai Elantra Goin was driving, was taken to Ocala Regional Medical Center with serious injuries.
Juan Martinez Leon, 32, of Summerfield, was driving the other vehicle, a 2002 GMC pickup, according to the FHP. He received minor injuries.
The crash occurred at about 8:36 p.m. at the intersection of South U.S. 441 and Southeast 92nd Place Road.
According to the FHP, the pickup was traveling north on U.S. 441 in the inside lane. The car was traveling west on Southeast 92nd Place Road and attempted to make a left turn at the intersection. The car had a green light.
Troopers said Leon failed to stop for the red light and hit the driver's side of the car. Both vehicles came to rest in the center median of U.S. 441.
The crash was still under investigation, and charges were pending.
After the crash, drivers near the intersection headed north on U.S. 441 were being detoured at Southeast 92nd Place Road and southbound drivers were snarled in slow-moving traffic. The northbound drivers, when coming off the detour, were directed onto Baseline Road, officials said.
The driver of one of the vehicles was being evaluated and having blood drawn, which is standard in traffic crashes that involve a fatality.
