Burns Harbor, IN : Michigan City woman dies in crash on U.S. Highway 12 on Wednesday, 15th April, 2020
A Michigan City woman died on Wednesday in a two-vehicle accident on U.S. Highway 12, Burns Harbor Police are reporting.
The victim was identified as Courtney Deming, 24.
According to police, at 11:19 a.m. Deming was a passenger in a vehicle being driven by Nicholus Wilke, also of Michigan City, who was eastbound on U.S. 12 when, just west of West Oakhill Road, he crossed the center line and collided with a semi-tractor trailer westbound on U.S. 12.
Deming was trapped inside the vehicle and subsequently pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Wilke was transported to Methodist Hospital Northlake Campus in Gary, then later airlifted to Loyola University Medical Center.
The operator of the semi escaped injury, police said, and the roadway was closed for approximately six and a half hours.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, with assistance from the Portage PD crash reconstruction team. The BHPD expressed its gratitude to the folllowing for their assistance as well: Burns Harbor Fire and EMS; Indiana State Police; the Portage, Porter, and Ogden Dunes PDs; the ODFD; the Porter County Sheriff’s Police; the Porter County Coroner’s Office; and Waffco Towing.
